Jill DavisSenior CORPORATE Counsel | ORLANDO HEALTH |
Jill Davis is Senior Corporate Counsel for Orlando Health, a not-for-profit healthcare organization which includes 29 hospitals and emergency departments and employs more than 27,000 team members and more than 1,200 physicians.
Describe your current role.
I’m in-house counsel at Orlando Health, where I specialize in employment law. As in-house employment law counsel, I oversee and manage all aspects of Orlando Health’s employment claims and litigation, including cases in federal and state court and charges of discrimination. I also provide advice and counsel to our leaders and Human Resources team regarding strategy and compliance.
What have been some of the biggest challenges or opportunities you’ve found in your current role?
The biggest challenge so far came just a few months after I started, when the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020 (I started with Orlando Health in December 2019). The pandemic was a uniquely challenging time for both healthcare organizations and employment lawyers, and I was given the opportunity to help guide Orlando Health through the many issues we confronted regarding workplace safety, accommodations, and vaccinations, all while the organization continued to grow significantly.
What do you think is the key to success in your current role?
I believe the key to success in my current role is similar to the key to success in a law firm: building relationships, doing good work, being reliable, and becoming an expert regarding the client’s business, including maintaining sight of the overall strategic goals and vision of the company. It is important to stay up to date on legal developments within your specialty, while also demonstrating versatility to work on unique matters and learn about new issues and practice areas to become a more well-rounded lawyer.
Describe your time with Lowndes.
I started with Lowndes as a summer associate and then it was my first job after I graduated from law school. I spent most of my time with Lowndes working in Business Litigation and Labor & Employment.
Share a favorite memory of your time at Lowndes.
Of course I always had a great time at the retreats, but my favorite memories are from the more informal get-togethers with fellow attorneys. I have great memories of going to Anthony’s to celebrate a co-worker’s first win in court, going to lunch for birthdays or to celebrate milestones, or just having drinks in the boardroom. I also will always value my professional development and frequently think of the amazing attorneys I had the opportunity to work with and watch in action in court, depositions, mediations, and client meetings.
