Summer Associate Program
The firm’s summer program is designed to provide law students with wide exposure to all the practice areas of the firm. This is accomplished through a rotation system by which each associate is rotated at two-week intervals through as many areas of practice as may be accomplished during the summer. In this way, our summer associates work under the direct supervision of our attorneys in their practice areas. By working closely with the attorneys, they are included in client meetings, hearings and trials which provides "real world" context for the research and drafting of memoranda, briefs and pleadings. This rotation program avoids the pitfall of simply putting summer associates in the library to field research assignments on a "first come/first served" basis.
Upon arriving at the firm, all summer associates are assigned "mentors," attorneys who will help guide them through the summer, answer questions and generally serve as a sounding board for questions and concerns which might arise. In addition, the Summer Associates' program is overseen by the Recruiting Committee and work assignments are structured in order to ensure that workloads are properly managed.
Through the mentoring program, summer associates are kept advised of their progress and of the ongoing evaluations of their work product. More importantly, the mentoring program facilitates the crucial element of socialization into the firm’s culture.
An important part of the summer program is dedicated to socialization of the associates with the attorneys in the firm. Each summer, the firm sponsors an all-expense-paid retreat at a seaside resort where each summer associate and his or her guest is invited to spend a three-day weekend with the attorneys and their guests. In addition, there are a number of planned outings during the course of the summer which take advantage of the entertainment opportunities Orlando offers.
Lowndes, Drosdick, Doster, Kantor & Reed, P.A.prefers to hire from its summer associate class. It is a principle of the recruiting process that the number of summer associates hired for the summer typically corresponds to the number of permanent associates which the firm intends to hire the following year. Over the last five years, the firm has made offers of permanent employment to more than 80% of the summer associates and more than 90% of those offers were ultimately accepted.
